I have known Tony and Sean from years of autocrossing with them. So naturally when I decided to get my e36 M3 running, Speed Trapp Racing was my choice to do the work. The M3 needed a lot of work, including a new engine and lots of suspension refresh since the car was sitting for 2 years. While that work was being done, I decided to do an arrive and drive weekend in one of Speed Trapp Racing’s Spec e30 cars.
The Spec e30 race:
I drove my motorhome to Thunderhill from Portland for the NASA weekend. For once, it was nice not having to tow a race car, especially over the Siskyous. When I arrived, Sean had already unloaded the car and was getting it ready to go. Speed Trapp Racing has a couple of beautiful Spec e30 cars. I was driving the “Red Baron” for the weekend. The car was beautifully prepared and detailed. It even had my name on the side windows and the front windshield.
After a few adjustments to the harness and sitting position, I was ready to go out on my warm-up session. Speed Trapp’s cars are all equipped with radios, ChaseCams and Traqmate data acquisition. With the Speed Trapp crew on the radio and in the pits, we were able to make quick adjustments during the session.
The Red Baron was competitive all weekend long. With 10 cars in the Spec e30 race, I had the most fun I’ve had racing in a long time. The podium finish on Sunday was just icing on the cake. I would definitely do another Spec e30 arrive-and-drive weekend even with my M3 ready to race.
BMW CCA Club Race:
When I dropped my M3 off at Speed Trapp Racing we set our goal at getting the car ready for the BMW Club race at Infineon in September. Given the state of the car at the moment and my past experience with race shops, I had virtually no hope of making that date. I was pleasantly surprised when Speed Trapp informed me that that car was ready to race well before the race date.
The car had a new 3.2 engine instead of the old 3.0. Speed Trapp had gone through the car bumper to bumper and fixed everything that needed attention. The shocks were refreshed, the car was corner-balanced and aligned. There was a new window net and a newly required inside net. Defective control arms and camber plates had been replaced.
Speed Trapp did such a great job on the Spec e30 arrive-drive weekend that I decided to hire them for the BMW Club race. I drove my 135i to the track and for once, I actually had fun getting to and from the track. When I arrived Saturday morning my car was already unloaded and ready to go. The car had been sitting for a couple of years in the garage and had some handling issues. The Speed Trapp crew was very responsive, making changes between sessions to address the problem. We only had 4 sessions all weekend because of the vintage race schedule, but we were able to fix the problem by the last session.
The Speed Trapp guys are not only very professional and technically capable; they are very passionate about Motorsports and enjoy what they do. For me, the social aspect of racing is just as important as the competition. Speed Trapp Racing provides a perfect race weekend. I’m so impressed with these guys; I want them to run my car at the 25 hour race.
